KidSport Edmonton Receives $10,000 Grant from the Butler Family Foundation to Support Local Youth in Sport
KidSport Edmonton is thrilled to announce a $10,000 grant from the Butler Family Foundation, a generous contribution that will help ensure at least 40 local KidSport kids from eligible families can access organized sport this year.
Increased Need for Support
This funding comes at a crucial time. Since 2021, the number of grant applications received by KidSport Edmonton has grown each year. With a projected 20% increase in grant applications in 2025, KidSport Edmonton anticipates an increase of over 850 new applications in 2025, which would require an additional $210,000+ in funding to meet demand. Grants like this one play a key role in helping bridge that gap.
We are proud to include this funding in our Birdies for Kids campaign. As a qualified charitable partner of Rogers Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink, KidSport Edmonton donations and funds are eligible to receive up to 50% in matching funds, further amplifying the reach and impact of this grant.
The Need to Create Equal Access
Supporting equity in sport access is more important than ever. According to the 2022 Parent Survey of Physical Activity and Sport Participation by the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute, only 19% of youth from lower-income households participated primarily in competitive sport—compared to 34% from higher-income households. Additionally, youth from lower-income families are more likely to participate in sport for just 1–5 months per year, compared to year-round participation in more affluent households.
At KidSport Edmonton, we believe no child should be left behind. In 2024 we actively worked with over 430 local sport clubs and schools to offer KidSport kids access to more than 43 different sport options—from hockey and soccer to gymnastics, wrestling, and more. Throughout our history, these numbers are even greater as we have worked with over 600 local sports clubs and helped create access to 85 sporting options for KidSport kids.
We extend our deepest thanks to the Butler Family Foundation, whose commitment to community wellbeing and youth development continues to make a difference to KidSport and other amazing organizations.
