I was born and raised in Fort Mckay First Nation. I am a captain of the Fort Mckay Northern Spirits, which is the first all-girls on the reserve football team in North American history. I have played eight football seasons within the past four years including winning a gold medal with Team Alberta. I also competed in the Arctic Winter Games playing Dene Games: winning a bronze and silver medal. I am also a member of The Fort Mckay Youth Council. I believe that sports can (as it did for me) spark the positive change needed by a lot of Indigenous youth and children like myself today. Health and mental health issues are challenges faced by many youth within my community, as well as many others. I have seen first-hand how sports can have a positive impact on this by offering a healthy outlet, helping develop coping mechanisms, staying active, and promoting overall well-being and helping us make healthy choices in our lives. Sports is such a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Being in sports has opened up many doors for me that I never knew existed.
