Matt grew up in England before moving to Canada in 2007 to attend Acadia University. As a kid Matt played both soccer and rugby at a high level, being involved in several professional soccer club youth academies and playing in rugby 7’s National Final. At Acadia Matt played for the Axemen for 3 years, captaining the team in the final two. After graduating in 2010, Matt moved to Halifax and began his coaching career with Halifax City Soccer Club as a volunteer, before being hired as a technical staff member, and eventually becoming the Technical Director for the Club.
In his time with Halifax City Matt was the Head Coach of teams that went to six successive National Championships, as well as playing on two City men’s teams that qualified for Club Nationals. Matt was also Head Coach the Mount St Vincent women’s varsity soccer team for three seasons (2013, 14 and 15). After losing the Championship game in his first year, the team secured back-to-back Championships in years two and three, becoming the first women’s team in 10 years to successfully defend their ACAA title.
In 2017, Matt moved to Soccer Nova Scotia to become the Grassroots and Community Development Officer. His primary goal with Soccer Nova Scotia is to promote and educate Clubs about the importance of Long Term Player Development (LTPD) and provide them with the necessary resources and best practices to implement it. Going forward Matt will be working with Clubs and Leagues to ensure that the game can become more accessible to everyone in the province.
