From no motivation to volunteer, to 15 years later, this is the kind of passion volunteers bring to the organization!
Mike Lang was initially ‘voluntold’ that he needed to volunteer for KidSport when he was starting out his Social Work career. Initially he was not motivated to volunteer, but once he began to learn more about KidSport’s mission and the impact for youth his passion perspective grew. What started for Mike as an obligation turned into passion and for over 15 years now, he has been with KidSport Melfort.
Sports have always been a part of Mike’s life. He started out playing hockey, baseball, and soccer, as well being able to golf with his father.
“Volunteering is important to me because it is an avenue to give back to my community and sports that have given so much to me as I grew up” says Mike.
KidSport has been an important part of the sport community in Melfort for many years, and Mike has seen the community reflect that value through generous donations and ongoing support. Mike is most proud of the relationships that he has built in the community, with community leaders, sport clubs, and families in the community. As well the amount KidSport has helped young athletes in the community throughout the years to be successful in their sport of choice.
Mike’s advice for current and potential volunteers is to network as much as you can with sport organizations, leaders in the community, sport organizations and keep the avenues of communication open. These connections are key to having less barriers for children in your community to play sports.
“Take the leap and engage in volunteering with KidSport” encourages Mike. “It is very rewarding; you get to be part of children learning integral values and skills that will contribute to increase well being in their lives”.
Thank you Mike for your dedication So ALL Kids Can Play!
