From Summerside, Ryan left home at 14 to attend the prestigious Athol Murray College of Notre Dame and pursue a hockey career. Following three years at Notre Dame, MacKinnon played three seasons with Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL before finishing his junior career as captain of the home province Charlottetown Islanders, achieving 50 points in 64 games played.
Following junior, Ryan continued his hometown play, playing three seasons with the University of Prince Edward Island. With a near point-per-game in his final year with UPEI, MacKinnon joined the pro hockey ranks with the New York Islanders system.
This past season Ryan continued his time playing in the Islander’s system.
