As captain of the Fort McKay Northern Spirits all girls football team, Alicia is eager use her influence to represent KidSport Wood Buffalo so all kids can play! đź‘Ź
“Tansi, my name is Alicia Gladue. I was born and raised in Fort Mckay First Nation. I am a captain of the Fort Mckay Northern Spirits, which is the first all-girls on the reserve football team in North American history. I have played eight football seasons within the past four years including winning a gold medal with Team Alberta. I also competed in the Arctic Winter Games playing Dene Games: winning a bronze and silver medal. I am also a member of The Fort Mckay Youth Council. I believe that sports can (as it did for me) spark the positive change needed by a lot of Indigenous youth and children like myself today. Health and mental health issues are challenges faced by many youth within my community, as well as many others. I have seen first-hand how sports can have a positive impact on this by offering a healthy outlet, helping develop coping mechanisms, staying active, and promoting overall well-being and helping us make healthy choices in our lives. Sports is such a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friends. Being in sports has opened up many doors for me that I never knew existed. It can create good opportunities just like this and I’m honoured to be a part of this amazing organization that has given so much to me in the past.”
