Government of Saskatchewan Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, Laura Ross, proclaimed May as KidSport Month in Saskatchewan. The month-long celebration of the children’s charity, which will feature events, fundraisers and celebrations, began today with a kickoff event at Kitchener Community School.

“Sport and recreation plays such an important role in the health and well-being of our children and youth,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said. “Sport helps children in all aspects of life and has positive effects on both their mental and physical development. We want to thank KidSport for allowing children in our province to participate by assisting with financial barriers.”

At the kickoff event, 60 students listened to Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation KidSport Ambassador Brett Lauther speak about the importance of sport. The kids had the opportunity to play games with athletes from the University of Regina Cougars women’s hockey team and women’s soccer team.

During the rest of KidSport Month, 41 Local KidSport Chapters will host fundraising activities, including:

  • KidSport Regina and KidSport Saskatoon Corporate Challenge Amazing Race held on May 18 and 20 respectively, where organizations and businesses will test their skills, agility and speed all in support of KidSport.
  • KidSport is also inviting organizations across Canada to encourage their employees to donate $2 and wear their favourite team’s colours on National Jersey Day for KidSport on May 31.

“On behalf of the 4,661 KidSport kids helped in 2022, I would like to thank the provincial government, sponsors, volunteers and donors of Saskatchewan. Without your contributions and support, KidSport would not have been able to grant over $1 million in sport registration, so all kids can play,” said Heather Shepard, KidSport Saskatchewan Committee Member.

“Proceeds from fundraising events during KidSport Month support children and youth from families facing financial obstacles allowing them to participate in our top funded sports including hockey, soccer, gymnastics, volleyball and basketball as well as others.”
