Celebrating Black History Month at KidSport Edmonton, we are featuring some notable members of the Edmonton Black Community who have made significant contributions to the sporting world-whether as athletes, coaches, mentors, or general members of the community.
Our third feature is Moiyan Toure, Assistant Coach at NAIT Women’s Basketball. Born in Liberia, Moiyan moved to Canada at a very young age and enjoyed playing soccer and volleyball until a suggestion to play basketball made her fall in love with the game. Initially, Moiyan didn’t think college was an option; however, coach Dwayne Vigilance, who became a guide to Moiyan, presented her with an opportunity to play at Keyano College. What a decision it turned out to be!
During a five-year career at Keyano College, Moiyan achieved incredible individual accolades. She became the all-time leading rebounder in ACAC history with 1,220, over 160 more rebounds than the nearest player. In her final year at Keyano, Moiyan was awarded Keyano College’s Female Athlete of the Year.
